Our school

The New Zealand Institute of English is a warm and friendly school in the centre of Wellington city, New Zealand’s capital. We are a faculty of the New Zealand Institute of Sport and share the same building which means that you can meet New Zealand people and practise your English!

The NZ Institute of English started in the year 2000 as a language school in the NZIS International Department and is approved by the New Zealand government. We are still part of the NZIS but our main focus is English language learning. Because of our relationship with the sports school our students can practise speaking with New Zealand students and can join sports teams and activities if they want.

Our classes

We have many different English language courses for all levels of learner from beginners up to advanced students. The classes are designed to study and practise speaking, listening, reading and writing.

We always combine classroom study with lots of speaking practice and practice activities. Classes are varied and fun and there are a lot of opportunities for international students to talk with New Zealand students.

All students take a test on their first day and are put in the best class for them. Students also have weekly tests, get monthly progress reports and a certificate when they finish the course. Our classes are small with an average of 6 – 10 students per class so students can learn more quickly.

Our teachers

Our teachers are all well-qualified and experienced. Many of our staff have studied other languages and understand how challenging it can be to learn another language.
